Carmine grew up very poor in a notorious neighbourhood in Providence, RI, known as a mafia stronghold. But he slowly and steadily worked his way off The Hill. He attended a state college, Rhode Island College, as a commuter, aided by a scholarship.

From there he went on to the University of Michigan on a full-ride fellowship, and earned an M.A. and Ph.D. For forty five years he was a college professor. But through grants and leaves. he spent much of the 1980's in South Asia, living in India, Sri Lanka and Nepal.

Writing is one of the great loves of his life, and he has published six books: three collections of poetry, a cultural study of porn, a Civil War novel featuring Louisa May Alcott. and the current memoir.
