This former Arizona sportscaster inspired students — and Charles Barkley — to get on air
When Gil Tyree came to KTVK-TV in Phoenix as a sportscaster in 1989, sports was already a big deal in the Valley, but not the huge deal it would become.
“It exploded,” Tyree said.
So did coverage of the teams — coverage that Tyree was a central part of until he left in 2003 for Atlanta.
The Arizona Cardinals came to town in 1988. The Arizona Coyotes came in 1996. The Arizona Diamondbacks began play in 1998.
All of a sudden, the Valley had every major sport, something fans probably take for granted now.

It wasn’t always that way.
“You had the (Phoenix) Suns and you had Arizona State,” Tyree said. “They were staples. Those two were the driving force in terms of the Valley. Everything revolved around those two.”
